Next Major Pokemon GO Update Will Be A Complete Gym Overhaul

A few days ago, Niantic CEO John Hanke gave a speech in Spain where he announced that there would be three major updates for Pokemon GO in 2017, with each of these updates expected to be as large as the recent Gen 2 update. Once the Internet heard about this, wild speculation ensued, and many players theorized that Trading, PvP, and the release of the legendary Pokemon would be the major updates of 2017.

Well, it hasn’t even been a full week since the news about the three major updates, but it seems like we might have the answer we were waiting for. In an interview with Wired Germany, Hanke told reporters that the next major Pokemon GO update will be a complete gym overhaul, with trading and PvP possibly coming later in the year.

While we don’t yet have an official translation (the interview was published in German), we can still get a feel for what was said. “The arenas simply do not work as well as we want. We know from Ingress that cooperation and planning are a lot of fun. When people have a common goal, it is a strong incentive to meet with friends or to get together with people you do not know,” Hanke told reporters.

There is very limited gameplay in the arenas. They simply do not work as well as we would wish. We will rework this aspect of the game so that there will be more teamwork and people will have more incentive and reward to participate in,” Hanke continued.

After speaking about the planned gym changes, Hanke went on to talk about the other two major updates planned for Pokemon GO this year: “For the two releases that follow, we are pushing the most diverse features back and forth to define the final goals.” The Wired reporter heavily implied that Hanke was referring to trading and PvP, which makes a lot of sense as they are two of the most anticipated features for most players.

And, finally, Hanke had something to say about the possibility of the legendary Pokemon being added to the game, too. When asked if Mewtwo and the other legendary Pokemon were coming this year, Hanke replied with: “I can safely say we’ll see more of it this year.” Hype levels are now officially over 9000!

So there you have it. According to John Hanke, the next major Pokemon GO update will be a complete gym overhaul. In my opinion, this is probably the best major update we could hope for right now. Trading would be totally broken if implemented right now due to all of the spoofer, but a gym overhaul, however, would make the game more fun and exciting without any negative consequences.

But what do you think? Do you think the next major Pokemon GO update will be a complete gym overhaul? Or do you think Hanke is just trying to throw us off the scent so we’ll be extra surprised when trading/PvP is added instead? Let me know what you think in the comment section below!

  1. I was reading your pokemon go article and wondered if you had considered creating an ebook on this subject. Your writing would sell it fast. You have a lot of writing talent.

  2. Reworking the gyms is a great idea. What would be nice would be having a message board for each color or a way to find someone in your color and area. That way you could leave a message to try to get a group together to try an takedown a different color gym.

  3. Spoofers control all the gyms in my area. There should be some gym fatigue built into the game. For example, after a week, every pokemon in the gym loses 20% of its cp everyday until it gets kicked out, after which they revert to their normal cp

  4. I like that some of my beasties can catch and hold a gym for a long time. It makes the game much less stressful. Where I live, some gyms are high turnover and some are not. It’s no fun fighting your way into a gym and then getting kicked out before you can collect more than 10 coins.

For those talking about limiting, consider this: While a Pokemon is in a gym, it can’t be powered up. That means everyone outside is getting more powerful while that Pokemon stays the same. Eventually, the low-ranking Pokemon will be chewed off the bottom of the ladder, so that even if the gym continues to be held by the same team, the individual Pokemon and trainers do have turnover.

  5. They seriously need to deal with the cheating and gps spoofing. There are 2 people in my area that play remotely and control all the gyms without leaving their couch. They also have multiple accounts in every colour. Very annoying and irritating to those of us playing honourably.

  6. Gyms need to have a maximum residency time… soon as 7 days is reached get automatically kicked out or something in line with the first pokestop and first catch bonuses … local gyms are all stuck with the same high level residents…. not really interested in trading….

  7. I still require 7 of the first set of Pokemon.I am in suburban Scotland can only collect what is about snorlax, lapras not appearing in my village. What chance have we got to get the others.oh and 10k eggs are few and far between.a reshuffle would be nice to see.

  8. I live in a suburban area and the few gyms around are dominated by the same players, often with multiple accounts. They also play a different colour so they knock you out and put their other colour in, which is really frustrating. I’m not sure what can be done about it but I hope the gym overhaul doesn’t make that practice even easier.

  9. As you say, trading, with all the spoofers involved, would be a disaster. The game would be totally ruined.

Gym change? Make is so you hold onto a gym for an hour or two…allowing one to collect 10 gyms before they are stolen back.

  10. As for working on the gems I feel that you should only be able to fight gems when it is time for you to collect that way maybe everyone will have a chance to tag in to collect coins to spend
