Pokemon GO Gyms Are About To Close: Your Final Chance To Get Poke Coins From Gyms!

pokemon go gyms are about to close

We first heard about this when the Solstice event was announced, in the form of a tiny little paragraph buried away in a sea of text on the official event announcement page. In preparation for exciting new gameplay features, Pokemon GO gyms are about to close temporarily.

Here’s the direct quote taken from the official Pokemon GO website: “…Soon thereafter, you can look forward to a new update focused on collaborative group gameplay features that will get you playing Pokémon GO in fun new ways. In preparation for these exciting features, we’ll be temporarily disabling Gyms for a short period of time.

So, when exactly will the gyms be shut down for maintenance? Our first thought was that the gyms in Pokemon GO would be closed on the 16th of June, since this date was specifically mentioned in the official Italian and Chinese event announcements.

However, in the days following the announcement, it was found that the translations for the Italian and Chinese announcements were incorrect, and that the gyms might not actually be closing on June the 16th. This has since been confirmed, due to the fact that it is now (at least) June 17th everywhere in the world, and gyms are still open.

If not June 16th, then when? Well, I don’t have any specifics, but soon. If you head over to the official Pokemon GO website, you’ll notice a little banner sitting on top of the page. This is what it says: “Heads Up: Gyms will soon be closing temporarily for remodeling. Any Pokémon you’ve assigned to Gyms will be returned to you at that time.

And, finally, a Niantic employee posted this to Reddit: “As we get ready to update Pokémon GO, we want to ensure that Trainers have a sufficient heads up that Gyms will soon be disabled so that they can collect their Defender bonus. We will provide updates on our social channels in advance of Gyms closing in-game.

As far as a specific date goes, nobody knows when the gyms in Pokemon GO are going to be closing. Based on all of the information available, however, it’s safe to say that it’s going to be very, very soon! Keep an eye out for more updates from the official Pokemon GO social media accounts.

But what do you think about all of this? Do you think the gyms will be closing within the next few days? And how long do you think it will be until gyms become operational again? As always, let me know your thoughts in the comment section below!

  1. I was battling in the gym this morning when the gym update was rolling out. What I experienced in two separate gym battles might be a preview of what’s to come. The first gym battle was a virtual reality experience with camera background only – no animation background available. The second gym experience was camera background only and no animated characters appeared at all. The second battle was clearly a glitch but these may suggest that gym battles in the future will take place in VR with animated characters.
