It’s finally happened: Niantic have confirmed legendary Pokemon are coming this summer! The news comes just weeks before the one-year anniversary (July 8th), and is leading many players to speculate that the release of the legendary Pokemon will be part of an event for the game’s first anniversary.
In an interview with Globo, one of Brazil’s leading news outlets, Niantic’s Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, Mathieu de Fayet, shared some interesting information. As well as the confirmation of the legendary Pokemon coming this summer, Fayet has revealed details about various other upcoming features.
In his interview with Globo, Fayet had this to say: “One thing we learned with (our previous game) Ingress was that the game can sustain itself if we are able to create social interactions amongst players. We are working on that (with Pokemon GO).”
“Because of (Pokemon GO’s) huge success, we had to delay some planned news. Now, we are working to announce new updates for this summer, like giving more value to the choice of teams, launching Legendary Pokémon, and adding battles between the players.”
It should be noted that, although the translation appears to make reference to player versus player battling (PvP), Fayet could have been referring to the long awaited gym overhaul instead. According to multiple Portugese translators, the original text is ambiguous, and could hold either meaning (PvP or gym overhaul).
Fayet also took a moment to reminisce about the early days of Pokemon GO: “We could never have expected it would become such a huge success. Our best engineers were unable to foresee the server capacity to support the players’ demand. Our biggest prediction was 50 times lower than what actually happened.”
“We knew Pokémon was a powerful brand with 20 years of existence and over 200 million fans across the globe, but people told us this game was for kids. They told us that it had no appeal, that people would need to get out of their homes to play.”
Now that Niantic have confirmed legendary Pokemon are coming this summer, how do you think it’s going to be implemented? Will the legendary Pokemon be given away for free, or will trainers need to earn them as rewards for completing a difficult task? As always, let me know what you think in the comment section below!
