Pokemon GO April Fools Day Event: Should We Be Expecting One?

Pokemon GO April Fools Day Event

The wildly successful Water Festival event has just wrapped up, and already, the Internet is discussing what the next possible event could be. Most people are betting on Easter, and that makes sense; it’s a huge holiday. Niantic would be foolish to skip out on Easter. But could there be a Pokemon GO April fools day event first?

When we think about April fools day, we imagine pranks, tricks, and practical jokes; all of which could be implemented quite well in a Pokemon GO event. And when we consider that Pokemon GO is only here because of a Google prank back in 2014, it makes the whole thing seem a lot more plausible.

For those who don’t remember, Google released an epic trailer for what they called the “Pokemon Challenge”. In this trailer, it showed players out in the real-world trying to catch as many Pokemon as possible (sound familiar?), and promised a job at Google for the first person to complete the task of catching them all.

Except, this was (sadly) all just an April fools day prank. When people actually opened the Google Maps app, there were pictures of Pokemon all over the place, but it wasn’t quite what they were expecting. However, this prank is what led to the idea and the creation of what we now know as Pokemon GO.

In an interview with Popular Science, in the weeks before Pokemon GO was released, John Hanke had this to say about the creation of the game: “The idea for Pokémon Go came from the 2014 Google Maps prank. That was the first interaction between Niantic and the Pokémon Company.

It’s obvious that Hanke and Niantic acknowledge that without Google’s 2014 April fools day prank, they probably wouldn’t have been able to create Pokemon GO. Therefore, many players are saying that it would make sense to have a Pokemon GO April fools day event as a “throwback” to their origins.

Most of the theories about what the event could feature involve turning all wild Pokemon into Ditto, releasing the Legendary Birds (but making them turn into Pidgey when caught), or simply switching up which Pokemon spawn where. Regardless of what Niantic come up with, an April fools day event would be pretty awesome.

But what do you think of all of this? Will we get a Pokemon GO April fools day event? Or do you think we’re just going to have to wait until Easter for the next event? Let me know what you think in the comment section below!
