Pokemon GO Is Responsible For Over 100 Million Pounds Of Weight Loss Since July

Pokemon GO Responsible 100 Million Pounds Weight Loss

8,700,000,000 is a pretty large number, right? If you tried to count that high, it would probably take you around an hour. Maybe even a couple of hours (!). Well guess what; that’s how many collective kilometers that we as Pokemon GO players have walked since the game first came out.

Yeah, you heard me. 8.7 freaking BILLION kilometers. Holy moly, that is a lot of walking we’ve done. The figures were made available yesterday on the official Pokemon GO Facebook page, and they were accompanied by this video that illustrated just how far we’ve actually walked.

Seeing that monstrous number got me thinking: If we’ve walked a grand total of 8.7 billion kilometers, just how many calories have we burned? And how many pounds of fat have we managed to shed? Don’t worry; I did the math so you don’t have to, and the results are down below.

Now for all of the fitness nerds out there who are going to call me mean names in the comment section, yes, I know, calculating the total pounds of fat burnt for a player-base of millions with only the distance walked is (practically) impossible. The figures I’ve ended up with are pretty good estimates, but they’re just a bit of fun, so back off, okay?

Cool. Now, according to the American Hiking Association, the average person will burn roughly 200 calories per hour while walking at 2.5 miles per hour (which is the average walking speed). When we convert miles to kilometers, we end up with 200 calories burnt for every 4km walked. There was a total of 8.7 billion kilometers, so when we divide that by 4 and multiply by 200, we’re left with 435 billion calories burnt.

435 billion calories is a huge amount. To put it in perspective, the average person eats around 2000 calories per day, so 435 billion calories would be enough energy to feed the entire population of Australia for around 10 days. Cool, huh? Moving on. To go from calories burnt to fat burnt, we need to divide our new number by 3500.

Why 3500? Because there are approximately 3500 calories in one pound of fat. When we divide the total calories burnt by 3500, we are left with 124,285,714.29 pounds, which for those of you who are mathematically challenged (no offence), is 124 MILLION pounds of fat!

124 million pounds of fat might seem like a lot, and it is, but when we consider just how many players are playing Pokemon GO, it becomes a little lackluster. According to the stats, Pokemon GO has been downloaded by (at least) 500 million players. 124 million pounds divided by 500 million players is (roughly) 0.25 pounds per player.

But hey, 0.25 pounds is surely better than nothing, right? As long as Pokemon GO is getting you out of the house, getting you moving, and keeping you active, you’ll be hearing nothing but praise from me. Let’s see if we can reach 25 billion kilometers by this time next year!

What do you think about this data? Do you think we should be proud of how far we’ve walked? Or do you think with the player-base the size that it is, this achievement isn’t really all that spectacular? Let me know what you think in the comments section below!
