Niantic made our day yesterday when they announced that, with the latest Pokemon GO update, players would be given a guaranteed evolution item from every 7-day streak. Then, only a few hours later, they did it again when they announced their latest event. And now, the Pokemon GO water festival event has begun!
The “Water Festival” event began at 1PM PDT on the 22nd of March, and will run until 1PM PDT on the 29th of March; making it exactly one week long. This event will feature an increased spawn rate on water type Pokemon; Squirtle, Totodile, Magikarp, and, there’s even an adorable Magikarp hat for your trainer to wear!
The full announcement from the official Pokemon GO blog reads: “Get ready to make some waves in Pokémon GO! There’s a global Water Festival in progress, and Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile, and friends are looking forward to celebrating with you! Starting today at 1 P.M. PDT, you’ll be more likely to encounter Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile, and their Evolutions all around the world.”
“Additionally, when you’re out exploring areas where Water-type Pokémon more commonly appear, you’ll have a greater chance to encounter several of the Water-type Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region, and maybe… you might even encounter Lapras. Also, starting later today, you’ll notice a new avatar wardrobe item—the Magikarp Hat!”
Pretty great event, right? So far, we’ve been able to confirm that these Pokemon in particular have been spawning more frequently than they normally do: Magikarp & Gyarados, Squirtle (and evolutions), Totodile (and evolutions), Seel, Omanyte, Vaporeon, Lapras, and many other (less rare) water Pokemon, too!
In order to equip the event-exclusive Magikarp hat, simply go to your character customization, head on over to hats, and selected the Magikarp hat. It’s totally free, and there’s nothing that you need to do beforehand to unlock it! We’re not yet sure if the hat will remain after the event is over, but we’re hopeful!
Oh yeah, and there’s one final thing that we should probably mention… Shiny Magikarp and shiny Gyarados have been discovered in Pokemon GO. We’ve gathered all of the available data and written an article that tells you everything you need to know about encountering (and catching) your first shiny Pokemon in Pokemon GO! Click here to give it a read.
What do you think about this event? Are you excited to be able to catch some water Pokemon while wearing a cute Magikarp hat? Or do you think this event just makes the game a little bit too easy by making some of the rarest Pokemon in the game extremely common? Let me know what you think in the comment section below, and remember the event ends on the 29th of March, at 1PM PDT!
